DeleteOf course, AIDS really was a new infection that seemed to come out of nowhere, and which had a totally mysterious etiology, while Ebola is relatively well known and well understood.
And AIDS was effectively a death sentence for many years, while Ebola is survivable with timely supportive care.
And AIDS has a long, unpredictable incubation period, while the course of Ebola is relatively short and predictable, which is why we have 21-day quarantines rather than five-year ones.
And AIDS was laughed at and downplayed by the Reagan administration — because fags! — while the arrival of Ebola in America is generally seen, even among conservatives, as a threat to "normal" people (i.e., something it's OK to spend money fighting).
Other than that, it's a great analogy! However, they left out the most important similarity: Conservatives went out of their way to drum up public hysteria about both diseases in order to demonize populations they hate.
